reclaimed wood

Inside Rathbone Place by Lucy

Photos from my solo show Marking Shadows at Lazarides Gallery, Rathbone Place London.

All paintings were created outside in the woods where I spent a couple of months studying the area.

In particular the way we react and impact on our natural environment.

These works are my intervention with this woodland area.

Thanks to Jess Howell and Ian Cox for the photos.

Front Room (from left to right):

'U' 'I' 'O' (Yew I Owe) 99 x 98cm. Monoprints hand burnished Yew on traditional Japanese paper with 2 colour screenprint.

'Nocturnal' 109cm diameter, ink and acrylic on canvas.

'Response' 149cm diameter. Ink and acrylic on canvas.

'(Yew) Black' 95 x 89cm monoprint hand burnished Yew on traditional Japanese paper with 2 colour screenprint.

'Studies no. 351 - 489'  43 x 43cm. Ink, acrylic, spray paint and varnish on beech.

These 20 studies directly reference each of the 20 beech stumps in the woods where I created all of the works. The deep scars of the saw and the fluorescent orange bruises from the marks sprayed onto the trees indicating which are to be felled.

The now stunted beech trees were felled due to the council planting saplings too close together and forgetting about them.

Marking Shadows by Lucy

This time next week my 3rd solo show at Lazarides Gallery opens.

I've spent most of these summer days outside, escaping to the woods.

Seeing man's intervention on the natural world everywhere, in turn I have been exploring my own intervention and connection within this environment,

allowing the elements to guide my hand.

Fisher & Ludlow by Lucy

Found wood built up around the area, discarded plastic accumulating into it's very own trash vortex on Lower Essex Street.

Thanks to Eye Candy for attacking the streets of Birmingham this weekend.

Thanks also for the wise and wonderful company from fellow artist Idie (sorry if I spelt your name wrong, let me know) who I often see cycling around town on his one wheeled BMX.

And Joe (Calzaghe - not the Welsh heavyweight but a Brummie heavyweight )

who made me realise there is one use after all for the plastic bottles drifting around the streets - he can use one to fill up and get a drink of water.

And finally thank you Newso for giving me a helping hand.
