Opening the Floodgates by Lucy

Here's a short film we made of the 90m wall finished this week. 🎥 Film by Matthew Watkins

The basin is where Harker barges delivered oil for Shell Mex until the 1960's, the only boats to travel sea, river and canal. Now a place of stillness where sand martins and swans reside. Working with Worcestershire Wildlife Trust the hope is that the mural will provide spatial references and visual clues to help direct more Sand Martins to the nest pipes inside the wall.

Centrala Residency - ‘Birmingham By Pass’  by Lucy

Within my ongoing ‘investigation’ into some of Birmingham’s more unapparent areas, ‘Birmingham By Pass’  features new works referencing my time spent along the canals and waterways of Digbeth. Culminating in an installation at the intimate gallery space located just off the canal within Centrala.

Over the next month this residency shall see murals painted along the Grand Union canal. As they appear and disappear the process will be documented and finally presented as a zine. Centrala will host weekly updates as the month progresses, providing an insight into this journey - one which is not revealed when you simply look at the murals or view them online - for it is not the finished mural that is the driving force, but the process of painting and the full absorption of those surroundings. In those hours you witness things often missed when passing by, meet and hear many people’s stories and from up high on the ladder gain new vantage points.

Residency runs from 9th June to 8th July.
Closing event 7th July.
