Contemporary Art Collection Acquisition by Lucy

Lucy is proud to announce that her EDP installation has recently been acquired by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for their permanent Contemporary Art Collection. The work dates back to her first solo show, shown at Lazarides Gallery Greek St, London. Driven by her speech impediment ‘Expressive Deviant Phonology’ and her battle to communicate, this installation challenged the artist to a more direct form of communication; one between brush and instrument as she spontaneously painted an entire room whilst musicians played within the space. This interaction saw both music and artwork develop and change as the conversation continued throughout the night with exchanges of sounds and gestural mark making.

Lucy’s work is held in many private and public collections. Including permanent collections of the V&A Museum London, the British Government’s Art Collection Rome, Urban Nation Museum Berlin, State Centre of Contemporary Art Moscow and Soho House Collections in the UK and West Hollywood.

'EDP Series I - Group II (Revisited)' by Lucy

10 years ago I installed the site-specific work 'Expressive Deviant Phonology’ at the Soho gallery Lazarides.  This was my first solo show and was based around my childhood speech impediment (E.D.P).
The work emerged as an experimental 'conversation' where during the course of one night I painted every available surface in response to the improvised music played by passing friends until the entire room was immersed in brush marks and sound.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the gallery I have revisited this installation to create a new series of prints. Using the remaining pieces of painted wallpaper I have spontaneously collaged and screen-printed them together to create these new unique works

Further along my exploration into the E.D.P series, we've collated the complete set of the seven woodcuts from the EDP Series II - Group IV.

Inside Rathbone Place by Lucy

Photos from my solo show Marking Shadows at Lazarides Gallery, Rathbone Place London.

All paintings were created outside in the woods where I spent a couple of months studying the area.

In particular the way we react and impact on our natural environment.

These works are my intervention with this woodland area.

Thanks to Jess Howell and Ian Cox for the photos.

Front Room (from left to right):

'U' 'I' 'O' (Yew I Owe) 99 x 98cm. Monoprints hand burnished Yew on traditional Japanese paper with 2 colour screenprint.

'Nocturnal' 109cm diameter, ink and acrylic on canvas.

'Response' 149cm diameter. Ink and acrylic on canvas.

'(Yew) Black' 95 x 89cm monoprint hand burnished Yew on traditional Japanese paper with 2 colour screenprint.

'Studies no. 351 - 489'  43 x 43cm. Ink, acrylic, spray paint and varnish on beech.

These 20 studies directly reference each of the 20 beech stumps in the woods where I created all of the works. The deep scars of the saw and the fluorescent orange bruises from the marks sprayed onto the trees indicating which are to be felled.

The now stunted beech trees were felled due to the council planting saplings too close together and forgetting about them.
